The name Shakopee comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where there are many ergs." Shakopee was founded in 1852 by white settlers who were looking for land to farm and build homes on. The town was named after General George Washington's home state of Virginia. Shakopee enjoyed a long history before it became a suburb of Minneapolis. In 1851, local farmers organized into a company to purchase 1,000 acres of land east of present-day Shakopee Boulevard and build themselves homes. The first settler in what is now Shakopee was John Haggerty, who purchased 640 acres on December 3, 1851. By 1860, only 246 residents lived in the town when it incorporated as a village under the name "Shakopee". The community grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on the eastern banks of Lake Superior and its access to natural resources such as lumber and coal. In 1847, United States Senator James Kiefer donated land along SH 610 between Belle Plaine Road and Eagan Avenue forresidential development purposes only; this tract would later become known as Kiefer Place. The site now occupied by Kiefer Place Shopping Center was also part of that donation. In 1865, Village President Amos Sibley selected three men from among his own citizens to design plans for a new courthouse which would serve as an administrative center for all villages within Marquette County. Work began on the new courthouse in November 1865 and finished in January 1866 under architect Aiken & Lewis.' It is reported that construction cost $3,500 each (an amount equivalent to $106 million today). A more recent addition to Shakope's rich history is its reputation as one of America's most vibrant agricultural communities – home to over 60 farms including some dating back to pre-European cultures! Agriculture has always been an important part of Shakopee's culture and economy; until recently harvesting wild rice had been their primary crop however this has since given way due to advances in technology
Shakopee was founded in 1846 by Peter Scheffer and his wife, Rachel. The town was named for the Shakopee Sioux tribe, which had been living there for centuries. The Scheffer family owned a sawmill and gristmill in Shakopee until around 1870. In 1878, the town rioted over a local issue involving taxes on whiskey. The sheriff's department arrived to restore order but were met with violence from the crowd. One man was killed and several others were injured when they attempted to disperse the protesters. After this event, shakopee became known as "the city of violence."
