In 1860, he married Maria de la Cruz and they moved to what would become Red Wing where they started a grocery store together and raised calves until their farm could support them alone. In 1868 Manuel Sanchez sold his holdings to Douglass Hodge who founded Stroudsburg which grew into one of the most important railroads in America. Hodge encouragedavage settlers to come live near him so that he could help manage their businesses and provide goods and services needed by local farmers as well as promote agriculture throughoutMinnesota during this time period When Minnesota became a U.S., territorial district on February 2, 1857 all Native American villages within its boundaries were destroyed including those in rural areas such as Savage where settlers had been living for centuries without any contact with their traditional cultures
Savage is located in the counties of Ramsey, Hennepin, and Storey. The town was established in 1856 as a trading post by John Nolen and his brother-in-law George Hammond. The first post office was opened in 1857. Savage grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to timber, water power, and transportation. In 1910, the town's population had reached 5,000 people. By 1920, Savage had become a major regional munitions center thanks to its productions of artillery shells and rifle ammunition. In 1945, following World War II, Savage became an important node on the Minnesota–Iowa border as it served as a junction for military supplies entering Iowa from Minnesota. In recent years, Savage has experienced decline due to factors such as population growth in neighboring cities and highway construction projects that have destroyed many of its buildings
