Savage is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It is on the edge of the Hillsboro Prairie State Park and has a reputation as being one of the most beautiful cities in America. The city's name comes from General George Washington's army's encampment there during his American Revolution, which was called Savage because no one could tell where it was located (savage means "uninhabited"). In 1875, when Minnesota became a state, Savage became its capital. At that time it had only 1 percent of the population but outran all other settlements in developing new districts until they were annexed into Minneapolis in 1903. Today, Savage still retains its rural feel with small farms and churches clustered around downtown streetside parks or squares; many of these have been preserved and become open to the public as museum stops. The Savage, Minnesota area was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1868. The area now known as Savage was part of the Dakota Territory when it was organized in 1862. In 1898, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature passed a bill creating the County of Mahoning, and within that county, the land around where Savage now stands was given to the residents. The name for the community came from Chief John Savage's advice to his people that they should build their homes "in such a way that they could see all around them." Savage began as an agricultural community with subsistence farming practices. By 1915, however, manufacturing had become an important part of the community's economy and by 1932 there were six businesses in town. Manufacturing included carriages and saddles, flour mills and feed mills, printing presses,and two sawmills. In addition to its economic importance, Savage also had a strong military presence due to its location on both sides of the Missouri River. The city hall is still standing today and is one of only a few buildings remaining from early days in town. In 1971, Savage became part of Ramsey County after being offered annexation by that county along with other towns in Mahoning County. Since then it has been steadily growing in population with many new businesses opening up throughout the years. Today Savage is home to over 1,000 residents and continues to be an important economic center for the area
On July 1, 1858, the first post office in Savage was established. The town was named for General Leonard Savage, who had led an expedition against the Sioux in 1851.
