Savage is a town in Pope County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. The eastern edge of Savage is on the Iowa River and its western edge is on the Saint Croix River. The first settler in Savage was Alexander MacIntyre who arrived there in 1854. A post office called "Savage" was established in 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1886, the town enlarged when it took over part of adjoining Riceville Township. In 1899, James Fenton bought land east of Savage from John Joyal for $5,000. He donated this land to the village of Savage for use as a public square and park that would include a bandstand and tennis court. The village also built a schoolhouse and store on the site. A group of Scandinavian immigrants founded what became known as "The Viking I" farmstead near what is now downtown Savage about 1900-1901. They were led by Nils Olsen (1868-1951). This early settlement grew rapidly due to growing need for farmland following World War I; however, by 1915 only five families had lived there permanently rootsome out during Prohibition Era Prohibition raids which disrupted business opportunities for these pioneers especially those who did not have alcoholic beverages available at home."

He and three other Frenchmen, Chartier, Leduc and Drouin, founded a fur trading post at Grand Portage on the Mississippi River. In 1830, the U.S. government granted land to the party for their exploration of what is nowMinnesota. The group named their new territory after General James Noble Savage who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Minister to Mexico City.
