The history of shooting target holders in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota began with the founding of the city in 1871. The town was named after General Roscoe P. Hill, who had been a hero of the American Civil War. The first target holders were built on the corner of Fourth and Market Streets. Sarah L. Finch, who lived in Sauk Rapids at that time, helped to create the city’s Shooting Club which meets monthly to shoot baskets or other targets across from her home. Mrs. Finch also donated land to be used for target shooting purposes on which she erected a large shed for storage and use by her club members as well as herself and their children when necessary. By 1895, there were five target holders in Sauk Rapids and they were all using different platforms with different types of projectiles (bullets, arrows). In 1916-1917 an addition was made to the structure at Third and Market Streets where two “Cannon Makers” placed cannons beside each whiteboard so that shooters could aim directly at the targets without having to move around them while shooting. These cannons were destroyed in WWII but their legacy lives on today as part of Sauk Rapids’s Laser Park located just off State Street next to City Hall! In 1949-1950 a new platform was added to one of the Cannon Makers locations at Seventh and Cedar Streets making it possible for shooters to shoot handguns instead of bows or arrows which led to increased popularity for this type of sport amongst adults as well as children! However, due to changes in gun laws during this time period firearms dealers were not able to sell handguns within city limits so Target Hangers Association was born! TPHA quickly became successful enough that it formed its own governing body with softball players (the dreaded TPA “Targets”) becoming its first directors/founders! TPHA soon decided that they would like more than just targets here – they wanted something better so they started building their very own shooting range…which we now know as Laser Park! It isn’t hard To imagine how excited these young kids must have been when they first heard about laser games being played on top of Laser Park – especially since few people knew about this kind of technology back then! As Target Hangers Association continued growing our projectile range slowly evolved into what we know today; an outdoor 9x13 ft Targets arena complete with 30+ feet long bow & arrow lanes, 10ft high steel posts for launching projectiles off ramps into adjacent lanes & 500+ sq ft green area perfect for practicing reloading techniques etc…. needless TO say we are still going strong over 130 years later 🙂
