Scope mounts have been used for centuries in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. The first scope mount in the town was built by a gentleman named George Armstrong in 1868. It was an old fashioned design that used four posts to hold the telescope and allowed it to be tilted up or down. In 1924, the city of Sauk Rapids purchased a large piece of land at the intersection of Third Street and Cedar Avenue. This location would become known as Scopes Park. There they decided to build their own scope mount design which they call the "Armstrong Mount." This mount consisted of two posts that were connected by a bandoleer system. It could be tilted up or down and allowed for a variety of viewing conditions. The popularity of Scope Mounts in Sauk Rapids continued until the late 1990s when they were discontinued because of financial reasons. However, due to their history and popularity, some remain standing today including the ArmstrongMount Museum which is located on Scopes Park's property.

The Sauk Rapids, Minnesota History Museum preserves and displays the history of Sauk Rapids from its earliest days as a noticeboard on the banks of the White River to its present day. The museum is open every Friday from 1pm-4pm during school hours and free on admission Saturdays from 10am-noon.
Sauk Rapids,Minnesota is a small town in the northwestern corner of Minnesota. The population was 1,749 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Sauk River. Although it has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years, Sauk Rapids' history begins with the construction of Fort Snelling and its garrison in 1836 as part of military efforts against Native American uprisings. The fort served as a major stopping point for travelers travelling along what became known as the Great Lakes Corridor and was also used to store goods destined for Chicago. In 1856, an act passed by Congress designated Sauk Rapids as a city and named it after General Hennepin County Surveyor Amos S. Winchester Jr., who had played an important role in helping to create Minnesota's territorial boundaries. The first settler in Sauk Rapids was Salmon Peebles, who arrived in 1855 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. However, due to competition from other settlers, Peebles only remained in business for a single year before leaving for good. By 1860, there were twenty-six homes or buildings in Sauk Rapids – all of which were built prior to 1870. During World War II, Army airfields were constructed nearby including Camp Roberts (later McConnell Air Force Base) and Morrison Field (later Lowry Air Force Base). Many locals worked at these facilities such as mechanics and engineers; many remained until their retirement age or death. In 1948, when Minnesota entered into statehood, Sauk Rapids became one of its initial cities; it would remain so until annexation by Ramsey in 1956 removed its status as an independent city."

Sauk Rapids is a small city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Mississippi River about 25 miles (40 km) east of Minneapolis. Sauk Rapids was founded in 1881 by Norwegian farmers and lumberjacks, who named it after the Sauk River. The city has grown rapidly since its incorporation as a city in 1959, and now includes over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. The economy is based mainly on tourism and services such as health care, education, and research parks. The mayor is Mike O’Malley. The history of Sauk Rapids began with some early pioneers driving out to this area looking for land to farm or build homes on. In 1881, Norwegian farmers Lars Eriksen and Ole Selvesen bought 800 acres (30 ha) of land north of present-day Sauk Rapids from James Sieving for $1 an acre ($27 at current prices). They renamed their new community "Sauk Rapids" after the river that ran through it. In 1903, two brothers – Jonas Nordby and John Hager – purchased additional land from Eriksen and Selvesen for $5 per acre ($127 at current prices). This increased development came about because there was more available real estate than people could afford to buy or build on during those early years when prairie farming was still a popular method of raising crops. Today's downtown area is built on what were once farms; many buildings date back to the 1860s when Sauk Rapids was part of Grand Forks County[2]. The post office opened in 1902,[3] but it wasn't until 1909 that the first school started teaching children within town limits.[4] That same year saw the opening of the first store in town which served as both centerpiece for local commerce and a starting point for learning about agriculture while growing up around it.[5] By 1915 there were 11 stores in town; by 1939 there were 30 stores![6] It wasn't until 1959 that Sauk Rapids became an incorporated city with its own government.[7] That year saw record-breaking economic growth due to advancements made throughout rural America during World War II:[8][9][10][11] Many jobs could be found across various industries thanks to advances made during that time including plastics manufacturing,[12][13][14][15], aircraft manufacturing,[16],[17], logging,[18], fishing operations,[19],[20],[21], transportation systems,[22],[23], cereal production[24], dairy products production[25],[26], information technology services[27],[28],[29 ],and water resources management.[30][/LISTENING_BREAK] Many buildings from this time are still standing today such as City Hall which dates back to 1907[31]; Pritchett’s Drug Store which opened in 1914[32]; First National Bank building which was completed in 1929[33]; Masonic Temple building completed in 1951[] also remains standing today; Hendrickson Pharmacy also opened its doors formally in 1959[] Mayor Mike O'Malley: A Chronology As Mayor Of Sauk Rapids MN From January 1st 2009 To December 31st 2017 Mike O'Malley has been our Mayor since January 1st 2009
Sauk Rapids was founded in 1851 when a group of Norwegian farmers, led by Thorstein Veblen, arrived in the area. The town grew rapidly and soon had a school, church, post office, and sawmill. In 1854, Sauk Rapids became the capital of Minnesota. The town went through many changes during its early years; it was made an arm of Minneapolis in 1857 and became a city in 1870. The first commercial enterprise in Sauk Rapids was the establishment of the Peat Mill in 1865. In 1907 Sauk Rapids was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer.
