Sauk Rapids, Minnesota is a town in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. Sauk Rapids is located on the east bank of theMississippi River. The first Europeans to reach present-day Sauk Rapids were French fur traders in 1741. This area was part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolutionary War. In 1819, Sauk Rapids became a village and was incorporated as a town in 1867. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson delivered an address from atop Mount Rushmore National Monument in which he called for America's 'great experiment' called national self-reliance and warned that '[t]he working class [of America] must be especially watchful lest their interests be neglected.'" This speech inspired many people in Sauk Rapids to become involved in politics and helped push for progressive policies during the Progressive Era. In 1969, Mayor Abe Weinreb announced plans to build an amusement park that would feature rides such as log flumes and coasters. However, this proposal was met with opposition from residents who felt that it would ruin what made Sauk Rapids unique – its natural environment and history. The city eventually withdrew its plans after several public hearings and lawsuits were filed by opponents. In 1857, Peter and Catharine Sauk decided to move from their previous farmstead near Rome, Illinois so they could start a new life in what would become Minnesota. They named their new settlement after their father John Sauk (pronouncedSAULT-wah), an Ojibwe from present-day Superior County, Wisconsin who had fought for United States independence during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After arriving inMinnesota they began settling on small parcels of land that were donated or given to them by settlers throughout the state including lumberman Abraham Lincoln and early farmer George Hennepin. The first buildings erected in what would become known as village were log cabins which served as homes for local farmers until 1840 when a sawmill was built which allowed residents to purchase goods made from lumber grown within walking distance of their homes. From this point forward many residents worked at various local mills while others took up farming or started businesses such as bootlegging during prohibition years before that period ended In 1907 city leaders decided that it was time for a new name for the community which had been called "Saulteaux" since 1857 due to its proximity to where Saulteaux First Nation people lived just upstream from modern day Sauk Rapids on Mischagin Island
