Sauk Rapids is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2000 census. Sauk Rapids is located on the east bank of theMississippi River and is bordered by the towns of Hastings to the north and Hibbing to the south. It has a longueurline that runs from northeast to southwest. The first Europeans to visit Sauk Rapids were fur traders working for Hennepin County in 1824-25. The first permanent settler in Sauk Rapids was David Cook in 1829; he moved from Palmyra, New York. Cook named his community after his father's birthplace, Soukrai (Syria). In 1839, Isaac Hendricks built a cabin on what would become known as State Highway 6 near present day Centre Street and Highway 10 west of town. In 1865, John Aitken bought land from David Cook for $5 per acre and started farming it himself. He named his farm "Aitken's Prairie". At this time Sauk Rapids had a population of about 100 people. By 1870, however, Aitken's Prairie had become an important stop on stagecoach routes between Minneapolis and St Paul and also served as an agricultural center around which many smaller families clustered. In 1876, territorial officers burned down Aitken's Prairie so they could build their new courthouse there instead; this event is generally considered to have inception with the incorporation of Sauk Rapids into Ramsey County two years later.* During World War II, Noorse Air Force Base operated out of nearby Hibbing until its closure in 1961; then it was used as an overflow storage site for local farmers during the summer months until fall when it became available for housing.* The formation of municipal government in 1959 led to creation of three departments: public works/transportation/parking; health & welfare; and economic development/commerce* In 1978*, fire destroyed part of Aitken's Prairie which again caused significant inconvenience for residents* ; following a $2 million donation by philanthropist Jens Nygaard*, reconstruction began almost immediately with help from donations from individuals across America* . Today much Of Aitken’s Prairie remains unoccupied due to vandalism or lack thereof but some restoration has occurred over time including re-landscaping * . The current name given to village subdivision within city limits is “Aitken Village” after Mrs Jens Nygaard’s donation

Sauk Rapids is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Sauk Rapids was incorporated as a city in 1892. The name of the town comes from the Dakota language word sauku (a type of corn). Sauk Rapids post office was established in 1881 and continues to serve today. The first settler in what would become Sauk Rapids were two men, Isaac Smith and Jacob Sauer, who arrived on February 12th, 1851. They were part of the first wagon train to come through our area. Their arrival signaled an end to the buffalo hunt that had been going on for years previous. The next year saw more settlers arrive including Henry Deering and George Wohlgemuth who built a cabin near present day intersection of State Rd 5 and 3rd Street In 1862 another group of pioneers came by boat upriver to purchase land from the Sioux Indians which they would later fence off and named Prairie du Chien after their home state Chicago Illinois. They also erected a log courthouse which still stands today at 4th Street NW corner SW corner First Avenue NE In 1875 when railroad construction started through our area there was much discussion as to where it should go – north or south? Eventually it chose to go downriver so that trains could go directly into Minneapolis instead of havingto detour around Our Lake and then roundtrip back upriver again. This decision allowed for new businesses such as lumberyards and bankships along with housing developments like Uniontown which are still standing today It wasn’t until 1907 when Sauk Rapids got its own water supply which greatly helped reduce flooding along with other improvements like drainage systems that made life easier for all involved . By 1915 over one hundred people lived in Sauk Rapids while only forty five remained by 1920 however this number slowly began declining during World War II due to army stationed throughout our area . In 1945 all remnants of Uniontown were destroyed by fire however some remaining homes have since been restored Today Sauk Rapids has slowly begun recovering but still faces many challenges such as dwindling enrollment & lack of available funding for infrastructure projects
Sauk Rapids was founded in 1851 by John and Anna Sauk. The town was named after the Sauk River, which flows through its center. The Sauks were first known for their farming skills and their large hay crops. In the early 20th century, the town began to grow as a result of its location on the Upper Mississippi River. By 1920, Sauk Rapids had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1929, the city of Minneapolis established a city police department in order to keep up with Sauk Rapids’ growing population. After World War II, many businesses in Sauk Rapids moved out of town because of the high cost of living. However, some residents kept their businesses until the late 1990s when they closed down due to economic decline. Today, there is only a small amount of commercial activity in Sauk Rapids and it is generally considered an agricultural community.
