Sartell, Minnesota is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. The town is located in Ramsey County. The first settler on the current site of Sartell were two men, John and Peter Sartell, who arrived in 1836. They named their farm "Nordheim" after one of their children and son-in-law, Nordheim from Sweden. The name "Sartell" was applied to the entire township by Jens Nilsen in 1857 and it has been used continuously since then. The lumber industry dominated early community life and many mills were built along the river for processing timber brought down by loggers or floated downriver on barges. By 1904 there were six mills in operation with a total capacity of 730 thousand board feet (240 thousand sq ft). In 1916 a new mill was built which became known as the " Giant". This mill processed more than 1 million boards per day until it closed its doors in 1978 due to pollution problems. In recent years, however, there have been several efforts to revive the milling industry in Sartell with some success; for example, reopening of the Old Mill Museum adjacent to Main Street where displays about local history are available as well as demonstrations of how flour can be made from cornmeal or other products derived from grain fed animals A post office called Sartell was established in 1856, but no mail ever traveled there because transportation was only accessible via wagons drawn by four horses over long distances between communities on either side of Great Lakes Region - something that would not be possible today because air travel is available within minutes In 1902 James Laidlaw purchased land southeast of present day Sartell and began building what would become known as Fort Snelling Barracks which served as a military post until 1953 when it decommissioned . The fortifications still stand today among surrounding trees near modern day Highway 9W .
