They gradually became miners and their community developed into a small village with a school, grocery store, post office, and church. In 1928, Sartell was incorporated as a city and its citizens voted to name it after James A. Sartell, an early settler and mayor of Saint Paul who donated land for the city. During World War II, Sartell served as headquarters for United States Forces Europe (USFET) in Grand Forks County until 1944 when it moved to nearby Duluth. After the war ended, various businesses began moving into Sartell including car dealerships and restaurants that continue to operate today. In 2000, Sartell voters passed a referendum authorizing the city to annex neighboring rural communities which had been without municipal government since 1984 when they joined together to form Ramsey County. This annexation has resulted in increased traffic congestion on Highway 260 because there are now three villages within 1 mile of each other - Algonquin (to the east), Maple Grove (to the northwest), and Southfield (to the south).

The first settler in Sartell was John Sartell and his family who arrived in 1855. The name "Sartell" likely comes from Swedish settlers' discovery of a lead mine there in 1857. The first post office in Sartell was established on November 12, 1858, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 14, 1861. The first school in Sartell was built by Reverend James Wickersham in 1859. It burned down in 1860 but was rebuilt and continued to serve as a primary school until it closed on May 6, 1902. In 1865, the Minneapolis and Rock Island Railroad arrived at what is now the intersection of US 40 andMN 362 about one mile north of present-day Sartell. This railroad led to increased business for local businesses such as farmers buying goods delivered by rail into their homes or stores; this also stimulated construction of churches and other civic buildings around the town center which continue to be used today including the current courthouse complex across from High School ( opened 1915 ). It wasn't until after World War II that transportation began to change significantly within Ramsey County with Interstate 94 being constructed just east of town limits along MN 362 . This created an immediate need for new housing developments near I-94 so jobs could be brought into the county by truck instead of going through downtown Rochester or out to Hibbing or Mankato etc., which had been traditional methods for bringing people & industry into centralMinnesota during this time frame
