Sartell, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of Minnesota’s “Blue Earth” region. The town was founded in 1854 and has remained an agricultural community to this day. Today, Sartell is home to a population of just over 700 people and its economy relies largely upon agriculture. Sartell is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 559 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Sartell Micropolitan Statistical Area since its inception on July 1, 2000. The city was founded in 1867 by Swedish immigrants, and it grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to their lumber industry. However, during World War I the city saw significant violence as German-Americans were drafted into military service and then taken to concentration camps throughout southern Minnesota. In 1920, Sartell voters passed a resolution calling for prohibition of alcohol in the city limits. In 1938, Sartell became one of only two towns in Ramsey County (along with Brooklyn Heights) that voted against joining the new state of Minnesota because they felt it would reduce their economic opportunities. Since then, Sartell has made occasional efforts to become more involved with statewide politics. In 2006, Mayor Chuck Green announced his candidacy for lieutenant governor of Minnesota; however he eventually dropped out after being elected mayor instead). In 2016-17 there was a push by City Councilmember John Dahlgren to make Sartell an official Gateway City designation within the Minneapolis/St Paul Metropolitan Area – this effort ultimately failed when final approval from both municipalities was not granted soon enough.

The early pioneers were farmers who raised corn, wheat, cattle and horses; but by 1900 Sartell had stopped farming altogether and become an agricultural processing center for eastern Minnesota counties such as Ramsey, Morrison and Nicollet. Today there are five businesses in Sartell: three agricultural (a cotton gin, a feed store, a restaurant), one business services (a mechanic shop), one retail (a grocery) and one construction (a water tower).
