Sartell is a small town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 753 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hennepin County seat of Minneapolis. The first settler in Sartell was John Neely who came to what is now Sartell in 1854. The community sprang up around a sawmill and grist mill on the banks of the River Doniphan. Neely's descendants still live thereabouts and are involved in agriculture, real estate, and other businesses. For many years Sartell was one of only two towns in Hennepin County with full voting rights; however, recent changes have allowed it to join the county as a civil township. In 1916 Isaac Loomis developed land north of town and named it after his late father-in-law, General William Tecumseh Sherman (1814-1896). The new town grew quickly due to its location near railroad tracks and easy access to commerce. By 1920 Sartell had 1,500 residents and had adopted a municipal government under which all aspects of civic life were controlled by a board appointed by the mayor and approved by referendum. In 1924 it became an incorporated municipality with its own police department, fire department, streetlights, public works system, library, schools (elementary through high school), park system (including both open space and municipally managed parks), water supply systems (wells plus pipelines carrying water from nearby lakes), telephone service (local services including long distance calls within city limits but also international long distance calls through area codes) and an ice cream factory located on Main Street (). In 1954 when Hennepin County merged with Minneapolis County to form Metropolitan Statistical Area #2 (#6 then #7), Sarteller lost its charter as an incorporated municipality because its boundaries did not change following annexation into Minneapolis City limits. However it continued to exist as a township until 1987 when that township merged into Hennepin County as well (#7 then #8).
