The history of scopes in Roseville, Minnesota goes back to 1876 when J.B. White purchased a 10-inch Dobsonian telescope from the Vancouver Observatory in Canada. The telescope was used for astronomy research at White's business and later also at his home. In 1915, Mr. White donated an 8-inch refractor to the Roseville Astronomical Society and it was used by members of the society until 1960. In 1929, Dr. A.F. Kapp donated a 5-inch reflector to the Roseville Astronomical Society and it continued to be used by members until 1978 when it was replaced by a 4-meter telescope owned by Mr. John O'Neill Jr.. In 1984, the 4-meter telescope was lost in a fire which destroyed most of the building on Monroe Street near University Avenue in Roseville. It wasn't until 1996 that another 4-meter telescope was donated to the society from Mrs.(now) Donnelan McCann who had used it as her personal observatory for many years before that! The new telescope is still being used today and is called "the Donnelan McCann Telescope". Since its donation, the Donnelan McCann Telescope has been able to provide telescopic views of many different objects including asteroids, comets, planets, galaxies and nebulae with resolutions up to about 20 meters per pixel! Additionally, it has allowed scientists aroundRosevilletoObserveObjectswith sharper resolution than ever before! It is also important to mention that this unique instrument was built entirely without any help from human beings! All of its parts were made either locally or within 25 miles of Roseville! This demonstrates just how challenging astronomical research can be - but thanks to donations like these from anonymous individuals like Mrs.(now)Donnelan McCann, we continue making progress every day towards understanding our universe better!
