The city has a diverse history that spans several waves of immigration, including Germans, Swedes, Italians, and Irish. By 1860, there were 12 residents living in Rosesville; six of these were farmers with four others working as servants or packers for local families. In 1865, Norwegian immigrants Johan Olav Sverre and Peder Larsen crossed the river from St Louis County to establish a farmstead at Ramsey Township (now Maple Leaf). This was followed by another group of Norwegians in 1867 when Mathias Olsen established a cabin at present day Preston Park. Most early settlers came through Anoka County where they found open land and began to build homes. The town site chosen for Rosesville was laid out by commissioners John Hennepin and George Burns on August 3rd, 1868; it included all present-dayRoseville Township except one block which became part of Vermilion Township east ofpresent-day Oakdale Avenue (now I-94). The town site lay northwest of present-day downtownRoseville between Cedar Street (northwest corner) and Cedar Creek (southwest corner).
