When Minnesota became a state in 1861, the land around Fort Snelling became Rosemount Township. A post office was established at what is now downtown Rosemount in 1865, and by 1870, there were about 25 residents living thereabouts. The community began to prosper when lumbering got started nearby around that time. In 1912, railroad developer George Wessel Vining donated land north of present-day downtown Rosemount for a new railroad line that would run from Duluth down the Missouri River Valley to St Cloud and then into Battle Creek County via Maplewood and other towns along its route. The project was completed in 1914; as a result of its completion, much of what are now central Rosemount and eastern Duluth became part of the town boundaries for the first time ever!
