The first European to visit Rosemount was Major Pierre Charles Dupré in 1809 when he and his party explored the region for fur traders. In 1824, John Jacob Astor founded the Stroudsburg Academy in what is now Rosemount and named it after him. He also donated land to the school which became one of two campuses of University ofMinnesota (UM) Twin Cities. In 1878, United States Congressman Augustus Kelley bought 1,000 acres (500 ha) east of town from John Laughlin for $3 per acre ($35 million at current prices). The land would later be used as a site for Chaska Air Force Base and other military installations during World War II; however, most significantly it served as the nucleus around which roserosemount College (now Rosemount Community College), established in 1955 by then-Gov. Ed Smith with support from Kelley's widow Vera and three friends - future UM president Franklin Murphy, state Senorman Joe Berger and businessman Floyd Olson - under a program known as "the Great Lakes Colleges Act". Rosemount has experienced rapid growth over recent years: according to US Census data from 2000 to 2010, population increased by more than 20%, from 431 people to 5,246 people; housing units increased by more than 60%, from 108 to 190; businesses have multiplied by more than 350%.
