The community was founded in 1881 and named for Mrs. John Rosemount, an early settler. The first white person to reside in what is now Rosemount was James Beattie who settled there in 1871. For many years, it served as a railway junction and stockyard stop on the old Duluth-Minneapolis line. AfterMinnesota statehood in 1912, Rosemount became one of the first municipalities within its new state boundaries.It remained general purpose township until 1959 when it became a city through annexation by Minneapolis-Saint Paul. In 1984, the city annexed large portions of neighboring Brown Lake Township which made Rosemount become both its largest municipality and second largest city after Minneapolis-Saint Paul itself

The act also required dealers to sell only registered guns and provided for background check requirements for purchasers. The ban on handguns was eventually lifted in 1934 but gun control laws remained stringent until 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Gun Control Act which tightened up laws around firearm ownership and use. This act made it illegal to possess any type of handgun without a license or registration, increased background checks for all gun buyers, established a national registry of handgun owners, and requires annual safety inspections for all firearms stores. The assault weapons ban was also introduced in this era but never fully implemented due to public outcry. In 1990, Attorney General John Ashcroft issued an opinion stating that there was evidence that people were using so-called “assault weapons” without having any real reason to do so. This caused great uproar as many people felt that these rifles were not really meant for shooting at large gatherings but rather were used more specifically against police officers or other civilian targets. After extensive screening throughout much of America by FBI agents posing as potential customers of gun retailers, Ashleycroft found no such cases occurring within his jurisdiction- thus giving legal justification for these rifles being called “assault weapons” once again! During the late 2000s and early 2010s there was renewed interest in carrying concealed handguns across state lines due to various concerns over recent shootings across America that occurred with little public awareness or notification preceding these events (e.g., Aurora Colorado movie theater massacre).
