The city of Rosemount reached its peak growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as it became an important center for lumbering and mining interests in the area. In 1907, when Minnesota joined the United States as a state, Rosemount became part of the new state of Minnesota. As a result of this change in political landscape, many residents chose to move away from Rosemount and form their own communities within the new state. By most measures, however,Rosemontians continued to live and work near their hometown until after World War II when industry died down and people began moving out into larger townships throughout centralMinnesota
Rosemount was founded in 1836 by Peter Akers and his wife Catharine. The first store on the site was built in 1840. Rosemount became a town in 1855, and its first post office was opened in 1861. The population of Rosemount grew to over 300 by 1870. The town passed through several name changes during its history, including: Highland Park, Eden Prairie, and Northfield until it reached its current name of Rosemount in 1885. The town's first school was built in 1865 and the first store closed in 1888. In 1912, the town incorprated into the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and began receiving city services from Minneapolis only after a referendum vote by residents. In 1916, construction began on the Rosemount Dam which helped increase water supplies for the community. In 1951,Rosemountpassed away from Minneapolis-St. Paul jurisdiction to become an independent city once again under the name of Rosemount
