The town was first settled by farmers who arrived during the MISSOURI potato famine of 1879-80. At first, they grew potatoes and corn; later they began raising cattle and growing hay. By 1905, however, most of the settlers had either left or moved away because of rising costs associated with farming operations in a new territory acquired byMinnesota under President Theodore Roosevelt’s Pendleton Act of 1907. The town was incorporated as a village on February 17, 1909. In 1920 it became a city when it annexed part of Elkton Township. The population reached 5,000 when it annexed more townships in 1927-28; at that point it became one of the largest cities in Minnesota without annexation ability. During World War II Rosemount played an important role as one of two American military bases within five miles (8 km)ofthe German city Königsberg serving as headquarters for General Dwight D Eisenhower’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). This strategic location allowed for easy access to transportation links between Winnipeg and Königsbergand gave rise to local nickname “Gateway to Germany” among natives and visitors alike. In 1945 Rosemount joined metropolitan Minneapolis as part of its inner ring suburbia following passage by Congress Of A bill creating what would become St Paul Park District No 1 along Interstate 94 east from I-94/MN 76 just east ot Maple Street near downtown St Paul MN
Rosemount was first settled in 1854 by the Hennepin brothers. The town was named for their mother, who had given them a rose as a gift. In 1875, the Minneapolis and Duluth Railroad arrived in Rosemount and started to bring people and goods to the city. The town grew quickly and by 1910, there were over 100 residents. In 1911, the Rosemount School District was created and the town became its own school district. The First World War brought much upheaval to Rosemount during 1918-1920. Many of the men from the town enlisted in the army or served in garrison units stationed around Minnesota. Some of these soldiers founded businesses or made new connections within their communities while others returned home with little idea what they would do next after leaving service. In 1925, politicians decided that Rosendale should be its own municipality separate from Minneapolis so that it could better serve as an economic center for both cities. The decision allowed Rosendale to build its own post office, library, fire department, water main system, schools and other infrastructure that would make it more self-sufficient than if it had been part of Minneapolis. The municipality was dissolved in 1954 when Minneapolis annexed Rosendale into its city limits
