The name "Rosemount" comes from two sources: one originates from Norwegian settlers who came to Clearwater County in 1847, and another originates from John A. Rose—a landowner and surveyor who surveyed Clearwater County in 1851. The first residents of what became Rosemount were Swedish immigrants who arrived in 1854; they named the community after their home country, Sweden. Clearwater County was organized on February 14, 1856, when it was created as a result of a merger of Clearwater Township (established November 4, 1850) and Ironwood Township (organized March 17, 1855). The first post office opened in Rosemount on January 24, 1861; it remained open until it closed on October 15th of that year due to low mail volume. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The town center is located at . As of the census[1] of 2000,[2] there were 973 people living in 151 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20% were non-families. 25%of all households were made up of individuals and 13% had someone else living alone who was 65 years old or older. The average household size was 2½ persons and the average family size was 3½ persons
