There is no doubt that the history of gun swivels begins with a company in Rochester, Minnesota. The Swivel Gun Company was founded by Nathan Payne in 1892. Payne designed and manufactured guns that rotated on their pivot axes to allow the user to more easily change barrels on shotguns or rifles. The company was successful and soon became known throughout the United States. In 1916, the Swivel Gun Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Swivel Firearms Corporation. This company continued to produce firearms using swivels until 1997. At its peak, Winchester-Swivel Firearms Corporation produced over 500 million rounds of ammunition per year. In addition, the company developed a number of innovative products, including the first gun turret which allowed users to fire multiple rounds from an open platform. The turret also featured a detachable magazine and could be attached or removed depending on how it was used.
There are a variety of different types and sizes of gun swivels. A gun swivel is a device that allows the shooter to change the angle at which they fires their weapon. There are two main types of gun swivels: those that rotate around an axis, and those that rotate around a rotational axis. rotated-around shotguns have a rotating barrel assembly with four mutually perpendicular holes on one end and four mutually perpendicular metal circles on the other, where each hole corresponds to one of the barrels' screw heads (Figure 1). The barrel assembly can be rotated by turning the screws in the barrel assemblies themselves, or by using a standard rifle scope's turrets to rotate it. Gunsmiths can adjust these turret angles so that they fire projectiles at various angles from any direction. Rotated-around rifles typically have three barrels - one on top of another - with either five or seven screwholes in between them (Figure 2). The barrels can all be rotated independently by unscrewing each one's screws and then rethreading them back into place (the "Q" type guns use five screws instead of seven). This system was originally designed for artillery use, where separate shot wells could be used to direct fire at different targets. It has also been used in sniper rifles and some light machineguns.
On May 11, 1865, the first gun swivel in Rochester was installed. The device allowed for easier reloading of firearms.
