Robbinsdale is located on the banks of the Missouri River, just south of its confluence with the Dakota River. It lies in Becker County and is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The name "Robbinsdale" was derived from John Robbins (1784-1868), an early settler and one of two men killed while fighting for independence against Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). A post office called Robbinsdale was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community grew rapidly due to agriculture, but declined following World War I because there were no new mills built in those days; however, it regained some momentum after World War II when several businesses were founded including a papermill and an auto dealership. In 2006, Robbinsdale voters passed a referendum authorizing construction of a new high school which would be situated adjacent to downtown on what had been farmland donated by local farmer Donnie Zimmerman - one of several such initiatives carried out by citizens throughout metro Minneapolis over that year as part of infrastructure development spearheaded by Mayor Randal Quarles
