Robbinsdale is a small town in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 624 at the 2010 census. Robbinsdale is part of the Minneapolis-St.Paul metropolitan area. The community was named after James Robbins, who founded a gristmill here in 1868. The mill closed in 1924 and the town took its name from him. The first settlers to Robbinsdale were farmers and their families who arrived around 1869. They built log homes on what is now Main Street. By 1870, there were six families living in Robbinsdale and two stores operated by Mrs. Eliza Holmes and her husband John Ladds respectively. A post office was established here in 1873; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1984. In 1924, the James Robbins Mill High School opened as the only high school in McLeod County; it served students from Robbinsdale through Hopkinsville (later Hyattsville). In 1961, the school became an affiliate of Masterson University which merged with Minnesota State University–Mankato to form Dakota State University that year; however, Masterton's share of the campus' budget ended up being used instead for new buildings at Dakota State University's main campus which opened that year. The village of Robbinsdale was founded in 1869 by James Irwin and his wife, Eliza. The name is derived from the Indian word "rabbits" which refers to a small stream running through the village. The first settler in Robbinsdale was Amos Beard who arrived in 1868. In 1870, John Wachtel settled in Robbinsdale and built the first mill on the banks of the river. In 1872, George Ladd purchased land east of Robbinsdale and erected a sawmill. In 1873, David Crawford bought land west of Robbinsdale and started a grocery store. In 1875, Hiram Sacket purchased land north of Robbinsdale and erected a flour mill. On July 1, 1880, local farmers formed the Village of Robbins Dale with General John Averill as its first mayor. A post office was established at Robbinsdale in 1881 and operated until 1886. The first school was built in 1888 and operated until 1890; it was replaced by a gristmill which still stands today. The present church was built in 1893 and serves as the town's primary cultural center today
