Robbinsdale is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,604 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County. Robbinsdale is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is home to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Robbinsdale was founded by Irish immigrants in 1881 as a small farming community on the edge of what is now Minneapolis. In 1925, Robbinsdale became one of fifty municipalities within Hennepin County when it was created from parts of Ramsey and Nicollet Counties. The city's growth has been spurred by its position as a crossroads for transportation and commerce, as well as its location near two large universities - Case Western Reserve University and the University ofMinnesota-Twin Cities - which have drawn students and businesses to Robbinsdale since its incorporation. Today, Robbinsdale remains an economically significant center for education, business and industry in north central Minnesota. The name "Robbins Dale" likely derives from Thomas Robberson who bought land here in 1881 from John McNamara for $1,000 (the amount then worth about $40,000 today). The town site was surveyed by J P Shields in 1882 but never built because of lack of money or interest; instead, Shields donated his land to the newly formed village of Springvale which would eventually become Robbinsdale itself. A group led by Samuel Hubbard purchased Shields' land in 1886 for $2 per acre (about $120 today). Robbinsdale, Minnesota was founded in 1854 by James Robbins and his wife Eliza. The town was named after the Robbinsons' farm near present-day Robbinsdale. In 1865, the town was renamed for General George Custer. The population of Robbinsdale increased from about 100 people in 1854 to more than 2,000 people by 1860. By 1870, the population had fallen to about 1,000 people but it rose to 4,500 by 1890. The first community hall in Robbinsdale was built in 1883 and served as the town's main meeting place until 1906. The first school in Robbinsdale was built in 1887 and taught grades one through twelve. A new school building was constructed in 1912 and served as the town's primary school until 1960. In addition to its role as a local educational institution, Robbinsdale also hosted a summer fair each year from 1911 through 1915. In 1917, James Laughlin purchased 5 square miles (12 km2) of land south of present-day Robbinsdale and began development of what is today known as Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport. He named his airport after himself and developed it into an important center for international travel during World War I – both because Minneapolis-Saint Paul had no other international airport at that time and because Laughlin believed that airports would play a critical role in helping bring American troops home from war abroad. After the war ended, Laughlin became interested in commercial aviation and started developing what is now known as downtown Minneapolis into an important business district for Minnesotans – something that he continued to pursue even after his death in 1947. In 1954, when Bob Dole replaced Clark Clifford as President of America, he moved his family to rural North Dakota so that they could spend more time with their grandchildren – something which may have been influenced by their experience living near Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport during their earlier years as Americans). However, Dole did not abandon public service within Minnesota; instead he become active on behalf of several state agencies including education reform (he helped create the state's first statewide library system), highway construction (he spearheaded efforts to build Interstate 94 acrossMinnesota), economic development (he helped create Job Corps programs throughout Minnesota), energy policy (he helped developMinnesota's renewable energy program) and social welfare programs (such as Social Security). He will be interred at Forrest Gump Cemetery just outside Fargo
