Richfield is a small town in Minnesota, located on the border of Iowa and Wisconsin. One of the earliest settlers to Richfield was Ole Hanson, who arrived in 1872 with his family from Aarhus, Denmark. The Rasmusens had been farming near Holmfirth for several years before moving to Richfield. In addition to their farm land, the Rasmusens also acquired some hunting and fishing rights on nearby streams. Over time, they would help develop what is now Richfield into a small town with a population of around 350 people. The Rasmusens were not the only ones to make an impact on Richfield’s development; other early settlers included John Hance and Peter Schlundt. Hance came overland from New York City in 1871 and began purchasing land in Richfield two years later. He would eventually become one of the largest landowners in town and contribute significantly to its growth. Schlundt also arrived soon after, coming overland from Sweden via Minneapolis-St Paul. He became one of the first farmers in town and helped build up what is now known as Schlundt Park – one of the biggest recreational areas in town today. Throughout its history, Richfield has struggled with many challenges: from being unable to compete against larger towns for jobs during World War II to experiencing significant population loss during the late 1990s when both Iowa and Wisconsin annexed portions of it (see “The Loss Of The Rural Edge”). However, through its resilience sometimes times comes obscurity – such as when noone really knows about all ofthe pioneer descendants who have lived or worked here since incorporation into Minnesota back into America more than 200 years ago!
Richfield was founded in 1854 by John C. Rich and his family. The town soon became a major center for the grain industry, with a flour mill, sawmill, cattle ranch and other businesses. In the 1920s, Richfield began to grow rapidly as an agricultural center, thanks to its location near the Minnesota River and its access to irrigation water. By the 1990s, Richfield had become one of the largest cities in Minnesota, with a population of over 150,000.
