Richfield is a small town in southwest Minnesota, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is home to the oldest rifle scopes in the United States and one of only a few remaining examples from before World War II. The history of riflescopes begins with European colonists who used them for hunting and target shooting. In 1857, Captain John Addison of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Regiment designed and patented what became known as the Addison Rifle Scope, which was first purchased by Major General George Armstrong Custer at Fort Laramie in Wyoming during his campaign against Native Americans in 1876. The rifle scope enjoyed great popularity among American soldiers during World War I because it allowed them to engage targets at range with reliablity and accuracy. However, due to technological advancements during that war such as machine guns, artillery shells, and gas warfare, rifle scopes were no longer necessary for military use after 1918. They slowly began to be replaced by other types of optics until they were finally discontinued in 1972 due to their low price point compared to other types of optical equipment available at that time. Today, many rifle scopic enthusiasts still own or use Addison Rifle Scopes from back when they were first developed; however, most are no longer made with metal components dating back to those days. These old riflescopes often have plastic or fiberglass lenses that offer excellent clarity and color rendition thanks to their high magnification powers- typically ranging from 4x through 30x capacity! In 1961, Richfield became home to one of America's largest military bases when Fort Snelling was relocated from Mankato to nearby Richfield after years as an Army post outside Minneapolis. Since then, Fort Snelling has been home to both US Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and US Army Garrison Red Wing before being transferred back to the Marines in 2013 and becoming Joint Force Command Red Wing; Combined Joint Forces Task Force - Minnesota; 1st Armored Division Combat Outreach Brigade; Air National Guard detachment Hennepin County Civil Affairs Team No 3; Moose Lake First Nation Tribal Council meeting place; Jakobstad Correctional Facility operations center; Stinson Aircraft Industries plant;[2] United States Military Academy at West Point helicopter base Miramar Annexe building—the largest single structure ever erected on campus—and many other tenant units or installations across numerous fields that have helped shape this unique community since its inception.[1] Today, rich field continues its tradition with vibrant businesses such as Shoe City Clothing Company,[3] Fine Custom Cars,[4] Heritage Hotels,[5][6][7][8][9][10] Puck Daddy’s Pub & Grill,[11],[12], Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.,[13],[14],[15], American Legion Post #609[16], Golden Valley Masonic Lodge No 2,[17]; Grace Lutheran Church ();[18],[19]; Anderson Nursery School ();[20]; Vikings football team’s training camp facilities.; Starz Cinema Cinemas adjacent property which includes two multi-screen theaters (one IMAX), 11 food concessions by Sbarro’s Italian Kitchen®, five movie screens plus digital sound system., three small convenience stores (), five apartment buildings (), six churches (), four theme parks (). There are also several hundred parcels or tracts used for agricultural purposes such as over 7500 acres (2500 ha) leased by MNsure Incorporated since it became state-owned health insurance company in 2014., two golf courses (), two tennis courts (), five business parks () which include Target Corporation Park headquarters building (). Heading into 2019 there are plans underway by city officials to develop another shopping plaza called "Third Street Plaza" which would be anchored by anchor store Macy's Department Store on Third Street South between Interstate 44W/Utopia Avenue SW and Interstate 94West just east of Interstate 94E off Highway 169 near Apple Valley Mall
