In 1949, Richfield became home to the world's first high school for girls and also one of the first public Elementary/High Schools in America. It is located on the Richfield Peninsula and borders Clearwater County to the south and Hibbing County to the north. The townsite was founded in 1854 by farmers who had come from Sweden. By 1900, Richfield boasted a post office, school, Methodist church, and three businesses: a grocery store, a millinery shop, and a sawmill. The population grew rapidly during World War II because of the oil industry; by 1960 it had reached 9,000. In recent years however ,the economy has been harmed by declines in manufacturing jobs and research and development opportunities within its local community colleges. The richield language which is spoken in Richfield is not related to any other languages spoken in that area or anywhere else in Minnesota.

Richfield, Minnesota is a small town in the state of Minnesota. The population was 971 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Big Sioux River. The town began as a farming village in 1854 and grew to be a large city by 1915. Richfield was named after its founder, John Richardson, who founded the village in 1854. The first settler in Richfield was John Ladd, who arrived in 1855. By 1860, there were twenty-five people living in Richfield. In 1865, Captain George Armstrong established the first post office in Richfield. By 1870, there were seventy-six people living in Richfield. In 1875, Averill Sprague opened a grocery store and tavern called The Gilded Cage which later became known as Sprague's Drug Store. In 1889, Abraham Kiefer moved to Richfield from Mankato and started an agricultural business called Kiefer Grain Marketing Company Ltd.. At the time it was one of the largest grain marketing companies in America with operations throughout Dakota Territory and north to Manitoba and Saskatchewan . In 1901–1902 Joeseph Pohl set up his own dry goods store at 7th Street and Avenue C near what is now downtown . He also built a sawmill on Big Sioux River for processing lumber from nearby forests . In 1903–1904 Charles Daly erected two hotels – The Pioneer Hotel (now known as Hennepin County Government Center) on Main Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets NW and The Riverside Hotel (now known as Central United Methodist Church) on Sixth Street between First and Second Streets NW – both of which remain extant today as part of central downtownRichfield . Richfield was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants. The first store opened in 1865. In 1893, the Richfield post office was created and operated until it closed in 1907. The town was annexed by Minneapolis in 1912, and became a city in 1917.
