By 1861, there were over 25 households living in Richfield with 4 shops active in this nascent community that included blacksmithing, wagon making (later flour mill), grist milling (later foundering lumber), carpentry (later Odd Fellows Lodge No. 6) and several farms/houses for locallivestock husbandry such as hogshead corn brewing etc.). In 1865, when Minneapolis was founded as an independent city, richield became one of its first properties annexed by Minneapolis from St Louis County near modern-day Bloomington Minnesota
