Richfield, Minnesota is a small town in north-central Minnesota. The population was 793 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Richfield County. The first settlers to Richfield were farmers who arrived in 1871. At that time, the area was part of Dakota Territory. By 1901, it had become a city and was named after Richardson, an American politician from Tennessee who served as United States Senator from Tennessee from 1895 to 1897. The town grew rapidly during the 20th century and by 2000 had reached its current size with a population of 1,644 people. Richfield has been home to several colleges and universities including Saint Anthony's College (1892), Hope University (1901), and Northern Illinois University (2007). The city also contains many businesses and restaurants which have helped contribute to its growth over the years.
Richfield was founded in 1854 by John Rich and his wife, Martha. The town began as a small community of about twenty-six residents. By the 1870s, it had grown to over one hundred residents. In 1876, Richfield became the first city in Minnesota.
