The town's first gunsmith, James Ransom, imported a number of cannons and pistols for use by local farmers. In 1892, Richfield became the site of the first state-of-the-art rifle training school in Minnesota. The school was founded by Major General John J. Pershing and was used to train American soldiers during World War I. Ammunition production began in Richfield in 1907 thanks to a partnership between noted manufacturers Winchester and Remington. It wasn't until 1911 that ammunition manufacturing became a separate industry within the town itself. By 1924, ammo production had reached its peak with an annual output of 1 million rounds per year. However, due to regulatory changes within America during World War II, ammunition production fell victim to rationing and eventually ceased altogether after the war. Even today, much of the town's ammunition infrastructure remains intact such as a storage building for rifles and shotguns dating back to 1922 which still holds munitions today!

The town was founded in 1854 by George Rich and his family as a farmstead on an agricultural tract near what is now Morningside Heights. In 1865, Richfield became a separate township within Minneapolis County. In 1870, it became a city with 11,000 residents; but its growth slowed during the Panic of 1893 and World War I. Richfield regained its prosperity after World War II through industrial development and suburban growth; it has since become one of the most diverse communities in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Richfield's nickname "City of Lakes" comes from its many lakes: Maple Lake, Cottonwood Lake, Blackthorn Lake, Willard Lake (now Mitchell International Airport), and White Cloud Lake (now known as Grant Park). The townships that make up Richfield include Maplewood Township on the north side of Maple Creek and Garden Prairie Township on both sides of Interstate 35W; Bloomington Township to the east across Nicollet Avenue from downtown; Falcon Heights to the south across I-35W from Downtown; Heron Heights to the west across I-35W from Downtown; Apple Valley to the northwest across I-35W from downtown; and Eden Prairie to the southeast across I-35W from downtown into Stroudsburg Township which includes much of Forest Hills retail center district today. The rich farmland around Richfield once supplied much of central Minnesota with food for cattle, pigs, chickens, wheat flour for breadmaking purposes and other goods essential for life on average citizens had no opportunity or means whatsoever to purchase or enjoy without great effort apart form those engaged in agriculture either directly or indirectly such as tenant farmers who rented landowner’s fields rather then growing their own crops thereby sharing some economic benefits with their landlord while providing them with services like irrigation ditches maintenance etc.; merchandisers such as grocers who sold foodstuff direct to consumers via wagon trains coming through westernMinnesota every Sunday morning handcouriers delivering groceries stored overnight at local churches before being distributed throughout easternMinnesota by rail Monday morning

He built a cabin on the edge of town and named it Middletonville after himself and his father-in-law, John Middleton. In 1829, David Richardson settled in what is now Richfield and founded the First Methodist Church there. In 1850, Isaac Tilton laid out a road to Richfield from his farm near Maplewood on the east side of town. By 1860, all of Richfield had been platted and developed as a village. On July 20, 1862, Iron Creek ran through Richfield; this made it an important stop for goods moving upstream along theMinnesota River during construction of the river's new channel. In 1865–1866, local farmers began growing corn for export to Chicago; this led to increased demand for flour in those years and also helped create a local industry that has continued to thrive today: agriculture
