Richfield is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the border of Clearwater County and Polk County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,752. The name comes from an early settler, David Richfield. The first post office in Richfield was established in 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. The community took its name from David Richardson, a pioneer settler who arrived there around 1871. The first store and school were built in what is now the downtown area of town; they were both destroyed by fire two years later. By 1886, most of present-day Richfield had been developed as a small farming village northwest of Minneapolis. A woolen mill was started here in 1895; it became one of the largest plants west of Chicago and exported goods for many years before closing down in 1933. In 1907 construction began on Richfield High School; it opened its doors to students on October 15th that year. It remains one of Minnesotas' most iconic educational institutions today. In 1932, after more than 40 years of service as county seat for Polk County, Richfield became an unincorporated community within Clearwater County when that county was created from portions of Dakota and Hennepin counties following the Interstate 70 merger route decision made by President Franklin D Roosevelt at his White House Thanksgiving Dinner (November 20th). The new county seat would be based approximately 10 miles northeast at Hastings on US 61/Milepost Road which paralleled I-70 between Glenwood Springs and Marshalltown; however this plan never came to fruition due to objections by local farmers who felt their land would have been better suited for another purpose other than serving as county seat." It should be noted that Hastings had previously served as both a village and post office during some time periods prior to becomingRichfield's official center late last century- back when there were multiple villages situated along I-70 corridor southeast or southwest von Steubenville IA while east side streets ran perpendicular north-south near Mankato MN making Hastings initially serve dual role but eventually reverted back to Village status circa 1990s"
Richfield was founded in 1854 by John W. Rich and his family. The town was named after a creek that flowed through the area. In 1860, Richfield became part of the Dakota Territory and in 1862 it organized as a city. In 1878, the city voted to incorporate as a village, but this proposal was defeated by referendum. In 1902, Richfield became an incorporated town with a population of 4,000 people. By 1920, the population had increased to 10,000 people and in 1924 it reached 20,000 people. The city limits were expanded to include parts of Stroudsburg and Eden Prairie in 1928 and 1930 respectively. The housing boom of the early 2000s led to some high-density development in Richfield; however there has been recent growth back into single-family homes since then.
