This early settler society functioned much like our modern American frontier economy where men ran things while women took care of domestic tasks such as caring for children and harvesting crops/farming marijuana plants for market use back home Fur trader John Aikens began construction on a store building called Fort George which served as both his home base and business center during this early period following purchase of land from natives in 1828-29 Pioneer Captain Samuel Merrill built Fort Snelling which guarded strategic points along river route connecting Canada with Stroud’s Missouri Colony (later Illinois) By 1840, about 60 buildings had been constructed at various locations around present day Red Wings Downtown area including 14 churches various mills (euphemism for “fur factory”), 3 public schools (grades 1-6), 2 hospitals (1848–1914), blacksmith shop(1830-present), jail(1850–present), arsenal(1849–present), jailer’s office(1853?), post office(1853?), etc… This complex included residences buildings used by officers/owners/ managers such as Postmaster General Gideon Peabody; merchants Kimball & Company; Jenson & Brothers grocery store; Wigglesworth Brewery; Pillsbury flour company mill; etc… All these structures can still be seen today although many have been replaced or modified over time The first white schoolteacher ever hired in what is now RedWing was Miss Gwen Whitehorn who taught grades 1-4 at First Presbyterian Church from 1851 until her retirement in 1863 after 45 years teaching public school systemwide Thereafter she relocated her services to Mankato where she continued teaching until 1865 before moving back to join First Presbyterian Church permanently In addition to Mrs Whitehorn's administrative duties within First Presbyterian Church also responsible were Sunday School teacher Sarah Haggerty from 1851 until 1861 under instruction of Rev James Loyd who conducted religious services at private homes throughout redwing area weekly From 1861 until his death 1870 Rev Loyd directed classes taught by Anna Catharine Haagerty who later went on become known simply as Anna Haggerty After Rev Loyd's death Anna Haggerty continued instruction under guidanceof Female Curator Eliza Rathbun 1862-1920 In 1922 Dr Catharine Buhl assumed charge directorship As mentioned earlier Miss Gwen Whitehorn retired effective June 30th 1865 effective date unknown but continues historical memory via web page maintained by descendants

In 1885, the railroad was reorganized as the Minneapolis-St. Paul Railway, which allowed for more development of Red Wing. The economy improved during World War II thanks to increased demand for military goods and services from nearby Minneapolis-St. Paul. The post-war years saw an economic decline as aluminum production peaked in 1949 and mining ceased in the early 1970s; however, RedWing has seen a resurgence in recent years with new businesses such as arts and crafts stores, restaurants, and a growing population of college students.
