Red Wing, Minnesota (MN) is a town in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,764 at the 2010 census. Red Wing was founded in 1871 by Norwegian settlers as a farmstead on the banks of the White River. The name came from the red sandstone that makes up much of their locality. The first post office was established in Red Wing on January 1, 1872. The first school in Red Wing was built on the corner of Third and Hennepin Streets in 1875. In 1886, a new school building and land were given to Red Wing by General James Wofford who had taken over command of Fort Snelling during the American Civil War. In 1907, Mrs. Lena Kapp donated 15 acres (6 ha) of land near downtown for public use as a parkland. On July 12, 1922, President Warren G Harding dedicated Dakota Park with speeches by New Deal leader Franklin D Roosevelt and Mayor John Vogl after vowing to make it "a place where all may find friendship." In 1937–38 renovation work began on what is now known as Old Main which included removing an entire wing from existing buildings and constructing a new building using local stone and lumber from old churches around town which served as the cornerstone for this project. This also involved moving several hundred Native American artifacts from two similarly sized museums across town to Dakota Park along with other cultural items from throughout Twin Cities history including costumes worn by real-life Minneapolis actors at live performances at City Hall back then! On December 6th 1938 Governor Nash presented plans for creating an airport east of town along present day Bloomington Road NE which would serve as both passenger terminals for airline flights into Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport while also providing space for military aircraft operations during World War II; this proposal failed due to financial limitations within state government but did result in federal funding being allocated towards creation of Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport some years later! In 1949–50 when Interstate Highway 80 opened up following its completion through central Minnesota it quickly became apparent that Red Wing needed more access so Expressway 84 was built concurrent with it just south of town eliminating most or all traffic congestion between MN freeways! Today I-85 parallels Expressway 84 & runs concurrently onto ND until connecting with I-94 exit 10 about east of town; making this one busy intersection indeed! In addition there are numerous small businesses located adjacent to expressways such as Egan's Department Store next to I- 85 & Nordstrom's just north of downtown while Target opens up location approximately every 5 minutes or so these days!
