It is the county seat of Ramsey County and the home to the Red Wing Air National Guard Base. The community was founded in 1881 as a small farming village on Hennepin County land near what is now Falcon Heights. The first settler in Red Wing was Elisha S. Dickinson and his wife, Emma Cady Dickinson, who arrived from Illinois in 1881. They built alog cabin on a rise overlooking the then-townsite. In 1886, their son Edward S., who had married Lizzie Bailey of nearby Hibbing, moved to Red Wing with his family and started a grocery store. Lizzie's parents operated another store in town until their death in 1902; that business became known as the Bailey Store Building still stands today within city limits (between Cedar Street and Second Avenue South). In 1913, when Minneapolis-St. Paul annexed Ramsey County, Red Wing became part of Minneapolis; but it reverted back to Hennepin County jurisdiction until 1974 when it became an unincorporated area once again within Minneapolis-St. Paul boundaries

Red Wing was founded in 1881 by Swedish immigrants who arrived as pioneers in what is now Ramsey County. One of their first tasks was to clear land for farming purposes. In 1897, Red Wing became one of two cities in Minnesota designated as "dry counties" because no water could be found nearby for irrigation or other municipal needs. The early days of Red Wing were not easy; there were few paved streets or housing developments until after World War II when development continued apace with growth in auto manufacturing and other businesses that have helped maintain its strong economy today. One significant event that took place during this time period was the famous D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6th 1944 which led directly to World War II and ultimately ended with American victory over Nazi Germany. Many soldiers from Red Wings served in various theaters including Normandy including PFC Everett Fenton who fought on Omaha Beach alongside General MacArthur himself as well as PFC Alvin York who helped lead an infantry platoon along with his unit's Medal of Honor recipient Captured Japanese Prisoner Of War James Aiello across into France
