Roosevelt later said that she found him “extremely interesting” because he could talk about guns without being afraid of ridicule or being accused of being soft on crime Many people today believe that Eleanor Roosevelt's visit at Johns Hopkins was instrumental in helping pass the National Firearms Act which classified all handguns as armor piercing ammunition In 1934 – just five years after Franklin D. Roosevelt took office – he signed into law The National Firearms Act Amendments which made it illegal to sell any type of handgun other than those used for hunting or self-defense
