The community was founded in 1881 by Finnish immigrants as a farming village on the banks of the Mississippi River. By 1906, Red Wing had become an important steel and mining town and served as a model for other American towns that desired to remain rural after World War II. In 1957, Red Wing became home to both Stribling University and the United States Military Academy (USMA), which remain its most prominent residents today. Red Wings are an agricultural town with many businesses engaged in agriculture or related industries such as lumber and food processing; however, they also have several professional sports teams including hockey's Minnesota Wild and baseball's Minnesota Twins. The name "Red Wing" comes fromPure Iron Mine No. 2 on land bought by farmers David Moyer and James Hickey in 1879 during their merger of two deposit companies called Iron Range Mines & Mining Co., Ltd./Dakota Mining Company/Minnesota iron works concern #2 (later renamed Dakota Copper). They named their new company after Pure Iron Mine No. 2 because it was one of only three mines open when they merged with those others - Dakota Mines & Manufacturing Company #1 (later renamed Twin Cities Mining) located about three miles away from town center near what is now known as I-94; and Iron Range Mines & Manufacturing Company #3 just east of town along US- 55 about 10 miles south of present day downtown Red Wing on what is now known as Rice Road - all properties being owned by David Moyer's father-in-law Hoyt Dakotan who operated them jointly until his death in 1907.(ref) In 1881, David Moyer landed his first claim on land that would later be named Red Wing after meeting local farmer John Pugh while working on Lumberman Isaac Neebe’s farm four miles northeast of present day Red Wing.(ref) When Neebe offered to loan Moyer $10 for seed money for his potato farm fledgling enterprise, Moyer took him up on his offer.(ref) With help from local Presbyterian missionary Rev Dr John Sievers( ref ), early settlers began planting potatoes near where he grew tobacco into what would eventually become known as Red Wing Township.(ref) On October 15th 1881 Reverend Sievers preached sermon before a crowd estimated at 100 people at Cadwalader Chapel featuring Rev Dr John Sievers calling upon them to settle thereabouts( ref ) Permanent settlement occurred around this time with Andrew Fenton establishing Claim 1 north side Trinity River west side corner private road full best soil good white sand loam tilled well( ref ).
