Ramsey is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Beaverhead River. The name of the town comes from George Ramsey who donated land to the community in 1881.
The first settler in Ramsey was John McLaren who arrived in 1825 and named it "McLarenville". He also built a cabin there. In 1834, John Fetterman settled in what is now Ramsey and named it "Fetterman Prairie". That year, he also donated land to the town for its founding.
In 1840, two brothers by the name of Hildebrandt bought 640 acres (24 km2) of land east of present-day Ramsey from James Aitken for $100 cash. They called their new place "Hildebrandt Township", after their father-in-law's estate near Hollandale, Minnesota. The first post office was established at Hildebrandt Township on May 10, 1846; it was renamed Ramsay on November 7 that year due to donation from George Ramsey.
In 1871, William Everson came to America and landed at New London Landing on Lake Superior where he met his wife Anna Møller Everson (1826–1912), daughter of Ole Rasmussen Møller (1798–1855). They married there on October 14th and journeyed westward overland through Canada until they reached American soil at Green Bay on December 11th. There they spent three weeks before leaving for Minneapolis with their children born there – Anna Maria (1872), Everett Edward (1875), Willa Catherlyn (1877).
It wasn't long until families began arriving here as well: Rasmus Olsen settled around 1850; Martin Larson followed suit about 1860; Anders Jensen arrived about 1870; Peder Sæther arrived about 1880; August Larsen arrival dates vary depending upon source but most likely around 1890 or earlier. There were no railroads available yet so goods had to be transported overland which took time and often resulted in conflict between settlers and Native Americans over resources such as hunting rights or fishing spots."Ramsey History-" p 9 Consequently many early residents died during an unsupported wagon journey across prairies unknown today.Garrison LN. On January 15th 1899 an agreement was made between representatives from various organizations involved with white settlement in Dakota Territory including farmers elected as part of territorial government commissioners appointed by President McKinley – these included leaders like Governor Henry Wickes – Indian agent Harry Emerson Fenton helped broker said deal along with David Lane manager general freight train depot & post office #5179
