Ramsey, Minnesota is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1858 by Ishmael Ramsey and his wife Emma from Illinois. The first settler in Ramsey was Isaac Larson, who arrived in 1859. In 1863, John Pohlman settled in what is now downtown Ramsey and started what is now the local grocery store. In 1865, David Carlson bought land east of present-day Main Street and built a farmstead that became known as "Ramsey Manor." Two years later, Hurd Larson bought some of David Carlson's land and began to grow crops there. In 1869, he married Emma Christensen and moved to what is now downtown Ramsey with her. The couple operated a general store until their death in 1903; their son Ishmael ran the business until it closed around 1975. In 1872, Julius Olson opened a lumberyard on current Highway 10 northeast of town; this business continued until 1902 when it merged with an adjacent firm to form the Olson Lumber Company which still operates today under its original name (though many have shortened it). In 1886 William Howells set up a grocery store northwest of town on State Road 706 after moving from Boston where he had been living for several years based on his interest in growing grains and cattle for market purposes only (the first locally produced product sold here). After coming to live here permanently about 1888 He also started gardening; soon enough he had acquired acreage south of present-day Main Street adjacent to future Pioneer Park which served as home ground for various community events including carnivals during summertime - one such event featuring American jousting contests took place there on July 29th 1889 headlined by Gov.-elect James Kasten who lost 4 horsemen against 5 opponents!
