As the city of Ramsey grew in population, so did its arsenal. Starting in the 1870s, Ammo Magazine Company was a prominent local business that manufactured and sold firearms and ammunition. The company expanded rapidly during the late 1800s and early 20th century, manufacturing handguns, rifles and shotguns as well as artillery shells and mortar rounds. Ammunition manufacturers have a long history in Ramsey; however, they are perhaps most famous for their product “ammunition” which has been an important part of both U.S. military doctrine and domestic gun control since the mid-19th century. Ammunition production began in 1848 when Amos Winchester founded Winchester Repeating Arms Company in New England. He designed new guns to fire shot heroin with a velocity of 1,000 feet per second (300 meters per second). The first rifle fired from a revolving magazine used 6 rounds per minute (15 rounds per hour). Rifle cartridges were also introduced at this time: .22 LR was first available in 1854; .25 ACP appeared later that year; 9 mm Luger became available in 1912; 10 mm Luger became available in 1915; .45 Colt becameAvailable nationwide starting in 1934. The first ammunition in Ramsey, Minnesota was a type of black powder cartridge developed by the town's founder, Jesse Ramsdell. The cartridge used a charge of either silver or lead shot. It is believed that early Ammunition dealers throughout the area bought and sold this type of ammunition. In 1892, the United States Patent Office awarded Jesse Ramsdell an invention for a new type of ammunition called "Ramsdell." This new cartridge used combustible material such as woodchuck feathers and leaves to produce energy which makes the projectile fly faster than with other types of cartridges. In 1898, Armour Company began selling this type of ammunition under the brand name "Ramsey Lead". In 1902, Armour Company merged with Browning & Co., making it one of the largest manufacturers of firearms in America. From 1902-1909, Ramseys were made in both Minneapolis and St Cloud.

Ramsey is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area. The first settlers to Ramsey were immigrants from Norway in 1858 and 1859. In 1860, they founded a sawmill and gristmill on the east side of the river near what is now downtown Ramsey. The town name originated with General George Armstrong Custer's unit during the Dakota War of 1862 when he was honorably discharged from his army service at Bow Creek ranch north of present-day Ramsey. By 1885, there were ten businesses in town and it had a post office and two schools. A branch line from Duluth connected Ramsey with Duluth by way of Pembina (now Winnipeg) in 1886 and Byrom (now Goodhue) in 1888; this line became part of the Northern Pacific Railway system after that company merged with Union Pacific Railroad in 1987. In 1912, brothers Hapgood & Lester Elliott started an advertising agency located on First Street in downtown Ramsey which remains active today as Edwards & Elliott Associates PC. They also donated land for city hall which still stands today on Main Street just east of Interstate 94 near Target Field. In 1925, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise hay called "The Hay Packers". The organization continued until 1985 when it merged with another local farmers' organization to form agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland Co..
