In the early 1800s, Prior Lake was a small community located in southeast Minnesota. The town was founded by pioneer families who migrated from Illinois and Indiana in the mid-19th century. The town was named for General James Hnderson, who fought in the Mexican War. In 1881, Prior Lake became a city and it has since grown to be one of the most populous cities in southeasternMinnesota. Prior Lake's history can be traced back to 1854 when Captain John Atherton built a trading post on the banks of the river near what is now known as downtown Prior Lake. Atherton's post served as a junction for traders traveling between Chicago and Minneapolis. Over time, other businesses affiliated with Captain John Atherton were established in Prior Lake including lumberyards, an insurance company, and a printing press. In 1907, Prior Lake became part of Hibbing County following its incorporation into the state of Minnesota. In 1911, Hibbing County purchased land east of town from two previous owners - J F Gorman and Wm L Menninger - which formed what is now known as Menninger Park%. At that time, Menninger Park consisted of over 60 acres (24 hectares) along Witham Creek which had been donated by Dr Wm L Menninger Sr.. The park opened tothe public on July 1st 1912 and soon became popular with citizens and tourists alike due to its close proximity to downtown prior lake and its scenic views of Witham Creek Valley. During World War II, priorLake played an important role as both an airfield servicing bomber aircraft flying out of Duluth AFBand also as a training ground for military personnel stationed at Duluth AFB during WWII. After WWII ended,PriorLake transitioned into an agricultural community largely based upon corn production until recently when advances in technology have led to new opportunities for agriculture inPriorLake including: ethanol production; poultry processing; grow crops such as soybeans; livestock raising; home construction/repair/remodeling projects... Today there are many businesses located within Downtown PriorLake providing local economic stability while still allowing residents accessto local services & amenities such as grocery stores & restaurants

From this initial endeavor many local businesses were born including J G Nichols grocery store which still stands today and Griggs Hotel which served as headquarters for both the Minneapolis & Stroudsburg Railroad Company and Stroudsburg Oil Refinery until they merged into Pennzoil in 1976
