Prior Lake is a small town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The community was founded in 1881 by farmers who moved from the east side of the Mississippi River. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. The first people to arrive in Prior Lake were fur traders and missionaries working for the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1881, the town was platted and named after Prior Lake on Milk River in Manitoba, Canada. The town became a center for farming because of its location near water resources. In 1902, Prior Lake was incorporated as a village. It declined during World War I because of military activity and then experienced growth during World War II due to munitions production at nearby Mound City Arsenal. However, post-war growth slowed due to low population levels and increasing competition from other towns in Hennepin County. The current incarnation of Prior Lake began developing around 1985 when residents realized they had lack of access to public transportation and needed more amenities for their children while they pursued higher education or worked outside of town jobs. A $5 million dollar bond issuance funded three major projects: construction of a new school building that opened in 2009; renovation and expansion of several existing churches; and creation of a parkland area on Town Common which includes tennis courts, basketball court, swim pool, playgrounds (including an artificial beach), picnic areas and more..
Prior Lake is a large body of water in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It was formed by the merger of two smaller lakes, Prior and Maple. The name comes from the Dakota word "pūrāṇa," meaning "broad."
