By 1900, Prior Lake had become one of the largest towns in Minnesota, with two churches, six stores, nine residences, five school districts (including four public schools), three newspapers and twenty-six businesses. During World War I prior lake became home to many Naval officers who were stationed at Pierced Arrow Harbor adjacent to Mankato while hostilities raged ashore across Europe; they would return periodically during peacetime for visits or leave before sailing back out into open water again when war ended In 1923 "Mankato Gazette" featured front page article "Naval Officers Visit Prior Lake" it said: " 'We arestrike hard at work' says Commander Smith as he looks out over pierced arrow harbor."
