Prior to becoming a city in 1955, it was part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. It is located on the western edge of Ramsey County and borders Stroudsburg to the east and Bloomington to the west. The first settler in what would become Prior Lake was George Hennepin in 1853. Prior Lake was named for General John Aiken who fought against American Indians in 1812-1813. Prior Lake had its beginnings as a small post office called "Gopher Prairie" which served farmers south of Selkirk on Hennepin Creek between 1865 and 1870. In 1875, when Minneapolis became an incorporated town, Gopher Prairie Post Office closed because there were no longer any farmers living within its boundaries. In 1905, prior to statehood, Prior Lake became a town under the jurisdiction of Minneapolis when it merged with neighboring townships of Hollandale and Cedarville. On December 1st 1905, Prior Lake's incorporation papers were filed with the State of Minnesota and it became a city on January 1st 1956 after being approved by voters at an election held that same month.
