Plymouth is a small town in the Borders region of Minnesota. It was founded in 1854, and has been home to the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, Plymouth High School, and the Plymouth-Langdon County Library. The population was 7,899 at the 2000 census. The first people to arrive in what is now Plymouth were French Canadian fur traders. In 1854, a group of men from Canada set out on horseback to find a new land grant that would allow them to settle in what is today Minnesota. They named their new settlement after Lord Carleton's Landing on Lake Superior where they had recently traded goods with the Indian nations. When they reached the area that would become Plymouth, they found it empty and barren. They built their first log cabin there in late November 1854. In 1865, when Minnesota became an American state, Plymouth became part of Langdon County. The fire department began serving local residents there in 1870; it continued service until 1983. In 1912, Plymouth started high school; it continues to serve today as its onlyunctionary community college campus. In 1978, the library opened its doors for public use; it currently operates as a branch of the Ramsey-Stroud Community Library system).
