Plymouth is a small town in westcentral Minnesota. It was founded in 1854, and has been the seat of Plymouth Township since that time. The townsite was named for the Plymouth Rock, which is located in the town. The population of Plymouth was 5884 at the 2000 census, making it one of the smallest communities in Minnesota. The first settlers to Plymouth were two families from Massachusetts who came overland on their way to Dakota Territory in 1851. In 1874, residents voted to incorporate as a township with a population of about 350 people; however, because there were not enough businesses within its borders to justify such an expenditure of money, incorporation failed again three years later. A second attempt failed due to lack of support from both sides of the political spectrum; this time around incorporation did succeed but with only about fifty residents voting in favor compared to more than two hundred who voted against it.
