Plymouth is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 4,309 at the 2010 census. Plymouth is the second-largest town in Ramsey County and is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. It became a township in 1872 and an incorporated city in 1909. Plymouth was founded by Abram and Anna Jclassen on April 15, 1859 as a farmstead on the west side of Mill Creek north of present-day Plymouth Road. The first settler was Abram Jclassen, who had arrived from Denmark in 1847 with his family and began to homestead land around what is now Plymouth Road. In 1861, Abram's son Jacob bought 2/3 interest in the farmstead from his father for $200 cash; he named it "Plymouth." In 1865, Anna died at home after giving birth to their only child, Sarah Jane Jclassen; her husband took over management of the farmstead and renamed it "Plymouth." In 1870, John Waring moved into Plymouth from Hibbing to take up a farming lease on property purchased by Abram Jclassen from John Hesseltine; Waring continued to manage the land until his death in 1880. For many years until World War II, Plymouth was one of three towns within Minneapolis that functioned as separate municipalities: other two were Brooklyn Center (northwest suburban) and White Lake (southwestern suburban). In 1909, when Minneapolis Cityhood was granted to both Minneapolis and St.Paul by state legislators under pressure from powerful banking interests concerned about consolidation within the Twin Cities metropolitan area,[1] Plympton became an incorporated city with its own police department.[2] On January 1st 1915,[3] Plympton annexed parts of Rochester Township due to disagreements over zoning laws governing dark brick buildings near streams—poultry farmers wanted access to water resources while homeowners desired restrictions preventing them from building excessive dwellings close enough for swimming or fishing;[4][5] this annexation created what is now Southdale Mall adjacent to downtown Rochester.[6][7][8] By 1920[9], Plymouth had become one of twin cities' most populous regions—the combined population density exceeded that of Minneapolis or St. Paul by more than twofold—and included areas such as Maplewood (southwest suburban), Eden Prairie (southeastern suburban), Westfield (northern suburb), Shoreline Park (central corridor suburb), Lakeshore Village(northwest suburban), Superior Heights(southeastern suburbs), North Side(northcentral suburbs).[10][11] According to 2000 census data,[12]: The city's economy has been diversified through light industrial manufacturing including automotive parts production since 1925[13], printing products since 1941[14], furniture making since 1975[15], paper products since 1984[16], food processing includingCanuck Foods Inc., which operated a grocery store until 2001,[17][18]; retailing services such as Home Depot Waymart starting opening up shop here during 2007; healthcare services through Mayo Clinic Health Systems located here since 2002; professional sports teams include the Minnesota Twins baseball team playing their home games at Target Field across First Avenue south of I-235 while also having recently built new ballpark called Copps Park which seats 635 people outdoors with views towards downtown Saint Paul across Seventh Street
