Owatonna is a small city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located in the Owatonna-Mankato metropolitan area. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. The City of Owatonna was founded on October 1, 1881 by territorial farmers from Chippewa County and named for Ojibwe chief Iwaleka Sakowin. The first settler in what is now Owatonna was John Aiken who built a log cabin on a hill near present day Park Rapids on December 2, 1881. Aiken's cabin still stands today and is part of the Owatonna Historical Museum which opened its doors to the public in 1962. In 1902, Jens Jensen purchased land east of town from James Ladd and began building a house that became known as "The White House". The first post office was established in 1903 with Wm Henningsen as mail carrier. In 1907, Pomeroy Gorman settled on property south of town and developing it into an agricultural community called Gorman's Corners developed around his farmsteads which remain today with varying degrees of development including several homes and businesses currently standing within the limits of Gorman's Corners Historic District managed by the Friends Of Owatonna Foundation since 1978. On November 3rd, 1913 local farmers led by Harry Potter organized what is considered to be the first retail store west of the Mississippi River when they opened their shop at 414 Main Street in Owatonna selling groceries such as flour, bacon, eggs and butter along with hardware supplies such as hinges and nails. Potter also operated a livery stable which served motorists traveling through town until 1954 when Interstate 94 road construction severed access to town center leaving only one business open during most peak hours; this business being used until 1965 as First National Bank freezer plant before being closed down again due to vandalism by students at nearby Stillwater High School prior to its reopening in 1997 under new management as an antique store cum museum with extensive displays about early twentieth century life in ruralMinnesota A total of fifteen other businesses closed or were looted during this time period making it one of America’s largest economic collapses caused by suburbanization - eleven out of fifteen were small family-owned stores! The single remaining grocery store operating within downtownOWATONNINO – Harry Potter’s Grocery – failed within two years following Potters closure due primarily to competition from new shopping malls opening throughout metro MN concurrent with major trends affecting rural American communities including automobiles becoming widespread among Ozarks residents leading some locals to develop claims that owatomnians had become essentially telephone numbers! Murdock, who arrived in 1857. In 1865, Owatonna became a town charter and began to grow. By 1907, the population of Owatonna had reached 4,000 people. Growth continued until World War II when Owatonna's population dropped to 1,500 people due to the war effort. After the war, Owatonne experienced a period of growth as new businesses opened up and more residents moved into the town. However, during the 1990s and 2000s Owatonna experienced a decline in its popularity due to factors such as high taxes and limited access to education.
