Owatonna was a small town in Fillmore County, Minnesota, United States during the early 1900s. The town was located on the north side of the Mississippi River and had a population of about 100 people at its peak in 1914. Owatonna's ZIP code is 55460. The first settler in what is now Owatonna arrived in 1855, and it grew steadily until around 1880 when a flood destroyed most of the town. The community rebuilt quickly, but by 1912 its population had decreased to about 60 people. The post office closed in 1913 and Owatonna's only store closed shortly thereafter; all other businesses either closed or moved away after that point. In 1922, however, Owatonna became an incorporated city with a Mayor and City Council; it remained an unincorporated village until 1974 when it became part of the Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area. The history of Owatonna begins with some simple pioneer settlers who arrived there during the 1830s; they were attracted to the fertile land and access to water resources available in those days. By 1840 there were over 20 families living there together plus another dozen or so settlers who came soon afterward as farmers or ranchers. As farming become more difficult due to changing market conditions, more people turned to business opportunities such as lumberjacking and fishing although hunting still played an important role for many residents including trapping game from forests near their homes. By 1870 only one family remaining active operated a farmstead out of which developed much of what is today known about downtown Owatonna - construction began on what would eventually be called Main Street in 1876 after local merchants donated land for that purpose adjacent to their store/grain elevator complex. During most of its formative years, though not without controversy - due largely to factionalism among local leaders –OWATONNA CITY COUNCIL did manage some key aspects which have helped make its place within our community(s) well known: development assistance from two philanthropic organizations (the Grosse Pointe Park Zoological Society & Masonic Lodge #5), inclusion on both state maps depicting Fillmore County circa 1915-1920 (state map number 7), establishment of educational institutions such as Stonington Male High School (1914) & Stillwater Female High School (1924), numerous cultural events throughouttown’s various seasons/months (pioneering nights at Masonic Lodge Hall by JF McNeely beginning circa 1904), establishment/operation from 1975 thru present day web presence managed by city officials – mayor included – primarily through website content creation efforts coupled with social media engagement thru email newsletters placed thru city hall marketing@ owatanomail dot com
