Owatonna, Minnesota is a town of about 12,000 people located in Owatonna County on the Mississippi River. The community was named for an early settler, Isaac Watkins. The first post office in Owatonna was established in 1876. In 1902, the first school was built and served grades one through twelve. In 1923, Owatonna became a city and the first mayor was elected. On December 3, 1930, Owatonna had its 1st fire sale and raised over $1,500 for local fire suppression efforts. In 1948, Owatonna annexed what is now part of Minneapolis-St. Paul County and became a city with its own government under the leadership of Mayor James Pugh. In 1960s Owatonna experienced some growth as it opened up to non-white residents and businesses began to open up along Main Street which then became known as “The Styx” because of the many successful rock bands that played there throughout the years including Rush Limbaugh’s childhood home). In 1984, Owatonna voters passed an ordinance forbidding discriminating against anyone based on their race or religion in any business or housing situation (the ordinance still applies today). That same year saw the opening of First United Methodist Church which has been serving the community ever since. Today, owatanonienses enjoy strong economic ties to neighboring cities such as Minneapolis-Saint Paul and Bloomington-Normal; however they maintain their small town charm by maintaining much of their traditional farming lifestyle including raising cattle and hogs., growing grains for breadmaking purposes., operating several shops & restaurants., manufacturing handbags,, silversmithing,,,, outdoor activities,,,, etc

The community was named after the Ojibwe word owatanni (meaning "headwaters"). The first settler in what is now Owatonna County was Hiram Hartley in 1854. He and his family were able to purchase land from the Dakota Sioux and built their log cabin on Big Creek. By 1870, there were about twenty-five settlers living in what is now Owatonna County. In 1882, a post office was established at Owatonna and became operational that year. In 1902, the county seat moved from Big Creek to Owatonna. In 1912, a new courthouse was built and served as the county seat until it burned down in 1978. During World War II, Owatona saw its heaviest military activity with men serving in the Army Air Forces stationed here during both world wars; however, no hostilities took place withinOWATONNA COUNTY itself! Today, Owatonna offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities including local farmers markets as well as various stores within walking distance of each other or by car across town accessible via I-494 or US 506/Mankato State Highway 371; thus making it easily accessible for residents of all ages and backgrounds who want to find groceries or other necessary items without leaving their homes!
