Owatonna is a town in Rice County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Owatonna comes from Ojibwe word "hatutanka" meaning "upper mountain." The first settler in what is now Owatonna was John Stevens on July 3, 1851. The community near where Owatonna now stands was platted in 1854 by three brothers - Jameson, McNaught and Alexander Mitchell - under the terms of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In 1858, Judge George Armstrong purchased land east of present day Rocksville for $2 per acre (0.60 km²). He named it Armstrong Township but changed it to Owatonna in order to make itanishable to settlers living east of the river bluffs above present day Oakdale and Waterville farms. In 1865, Washburn Cattle Company acquired 640 acres (250 ha) southeast of Owatonna from Judge Armstrong for $200 per acre (10 km²). This tract became one of many farmland purchases by the company during its days as a cattle raiser and speculator in this area; other purchases included 1 million head of feeder oxen at an auction held at Fort Snelling on October 10–11, 1865. From these acquisitions came what would become known as Red River Valley country: cornstalks reaching up to above water level were heaped high along streamsides left exposed when rivers formed; fields lay fallow for years before yielding rich crops that supported heavy industry during pioneer times: sawmills operated here until about 1870; several small brick buildings still stand today within sight of their original foundation dates – evidence that once large quantities of lumber were exported from this region via riverboat landing and wagon road connections to major cities like Minneapolis-Stavanger and St Louis – all without detriment to our environment or people’s health Although numerous First Nation people lived near present day Owatonna beginning with Chief Joseph's band circa 1400 AD., contact between European colonists and these groups was sporadic until after 1800 when traders began arriving with spruce woodchips unloaded onto prairies westward from Superior Lake through what is now northeastern Wisconsin Territory.. By 1830 there were two small trading posts located about southwest of present day Owatanna one led by Pierre Chouteau called Hennepin Point on Nicollet Bayou then operated by Nicholas Larkin & Co.; another post further upriver called Whitefish Point operated by Eben Ward & Co.. In 1834 Captain David Thompson navigated his shipwrecked vessel ashore on Little Falls River which he named San Francisco after Lord Sandwich's visit thereto some time earlier.. After surveying potential sites for a new settlement on Rosebud Creek he selected an area lying due northwestward upon current site votes cast therefor between himself & five others including three fur trappers Elijah Craig & Isaac Noyes who had recently returned from North Dakota’s Black Hills… Captains Anthony DeRussel & Samuel Hearn also made early visits hereabouts.. However no permanent settlement materialized until late 1835 when 5 men packed into two boats ferrying goods across Little Falls River set out for central Minnesota under cover of night toward Rockford Woods Landing having been informed by a Indian guide that this location appeared promisingly situated upon rising ground some 50 rods distant from any habitation or fortifications… After weeks journeying upstream they reached Rockford Woods Landing where they disembarked their boats and walked overland direct towards civilization while their commander continued his trek back downriver…. Upon reach ingrowth Of woods they again descended river ut en route back home arrived safely at Rockford Sept 30th 1840... Although not fully realized until later most important aspects associated with this period include establishment/growthof townsite (now downtown OWATONNA); discovery ol white earth manganese minerals used herein etc., etc….. As early as 1840′ Indians knew about iron ore available along Clearwater River just south o' Twin Cities vicinity

Owatonna is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Owatonna River. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis and St. Paul. The name "Owatonna" is derived from Ojibwe words meaning "river place." The first settler to arrive in what is now Owatonna was John Wesley Powell, who explored and mapped the area in 1855-1856 while exploring the Dakota Territory for United States President James Buchanan. The town site was selected because of its location on an oxbow on the river which he named Wyoming Valley after his home state—west of Detroit Lakes on US-2 (now I-35W). It wasn't until 1886 that a railroad depot was built here and trains started running between Owatonna and Duluth. This led to an increase in business around this time as people realized there would be more opportunities for growth if they could get closer to civilization than they were used to back east. In 1904, Owatonna became one of seventeen towns surrounding Duluth when that city merged with Minneapolis into a new metropolitan area known as Twin Cities–Duluth. After World War II, businesses moved away from downtown Duluth because of competition from larger cities like Minneapolis and Winnipeg; however, many remain today including KFC/Arby's/, Target/JCPenney/, Ford dealership/Kohl's Barney's/. At times during these years there were large protests against what some saw as government neglect of their community: such as when local farmers went out on strike against low crop prices caused by climate change in 1980s or when developers tried to build high rise apartments without permits during the 1990s recession. However, despite these struggles residents have always remained supportive of each other through various activities such as music festivals (such as Mardi Gras), arts & crafts shows (like Artsfest), charitable events (such as car wash nights), public education programs (including Sustainability Education Week) and member organizations such as Rotary Club, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Chapter., Kiwanis Club#1/#2/#3/#4/#5/, Masonic Lodge #7/8/(9/)#1010/, American Legion Post 185 (#1)), Northern Minnesota Women's Association (#2)), Lutheran Church -- Norwegian Synod (#3)), Moose Lodge #64/(65)/6/. Today Owatonna has a diverse economy with several major employers including Hennepin County Regional Healthcare District, Dow Chemical Co., First Things First! Clothing Store Inc., Mayo ClinicMinnesota Medical Centers Inc., ABC Broadcasting Company,. More small businesses are also active within its borders including Antiques Unlimited Inc., Flowers Unlimited Inc., Home Depot Stores Local 712 (), Warrior Jeep Group ()
On February 15, 1855, the town of Owatonna was organized. It was named for General David Dennison, who had led a brigade in the Mexican-American War. The town was platted on a tract of land that had been donated by John and Rebecca Laughlin.
